Drug Crimes

Regardless of your opinion of "marihuana prohibition," "the war on drugs," or drug laws in general, getting charged with possession or sale of illegal drugs is a serious event that may have lifelong consequences. Ed Mallett is a life member of the National Legal Committee for the National Organization for the Reform of Marihuana Laws (NORML).

Federal drug case indictments may be long and complicated, charging many defendants and many counts. We believe that a "joint defense" strategy by a team of competent defense attorneys can often yield a better result for our client not allowing the prosecutors to "divide and conquer."

Ed Mallett successfully defended two defendants in America's largest single marihuana seizure, 110,000 pounds, from a Colombian ship. We routinely help in smaller cases as well - a baggie, a joint or even a roach - knowing that a conviction for any usable quantity of marihuana or other drug can have harsh and adverse consequences.

Drug law violations may be charged in many ways:

  • Conspiracy
  • Marihuana
  • Other Controlled Substances
  • Possession
  • Smuggling, Sale and Distribution
  • Manufacturing and Cultivating
  • Prescription Medicines
  • Designer Drugs
  • Drug Abuse and Addiction

Controlled substances and "dangerous drugs" are listed in federal and state law regulations by the hundreds. The most common today include marihuana (marijuana), cocaine, meth and methamphetamines, heroin, MDMA (ecstasy), LSD, Xanax, Oxycontin, Valium, Rohypnol, steroids, hydrocodone (vicodin), and…the list goes on.

Mallett & Saper routinely represents professionals such as doctors, dentists, lawyers and others before the respective regulatory agencies arising from the arrest of the respective professional. We work with psychiatrists, psychologists, addiction specialists and treatment programs to "cure" problems at the source in order to obtain a dismissal of the related criminal cases.

The abuse of prescription medication can result in criminal charges. Many times clients are prescribed medications, become addicted, and when their doctor discontinues the medication the client chooses to self-medicate through the use of forged prescriptions, doctor shopping and other desperate efforts to obtain the prescription medication. It is a little known fact that health care professional often become addicted by abusing the very drugs they frequently prescribe. When arrested, whether people are rich or poor, they are jailed and held until released on bond like every other defendant, and the pretrial release procedure takes from several hours to several days.
