Edward Mallett proudly identifies and defines himself as a Criminal Defense Lawyer.

Ed is a native born Houstonian and a sixth generation Texan. He was raised in the inner city and attended Mac Gregor Elementary and  Cullen Junior High. He has friends and family ties throughout the state. He has belonged to St. James Episcopal Church for over 50 years. He trained to be a lawyer from early childhood, beginning with countless hours arguing politics around the dinner table.

Ed was Houston’s 9th Grade City Debate Champion. He also performed in children’s roles at Houston’s Alley Theater. At M.B. Lamar High School he was President of the largest National Forensic League Chapter in the United States and was the “Outstanding Representative” at the NFL’s National High School Debate Tournament.

Ed financed his Dartmouth College education with scholarships, loans, and employment in the dining hall. Ed won the U.S. Naval Academy’s National Invitational Debate Tournament as a Dartmouth College freshman. He was elected student government treasurer and was also elected to membership in  the Dartmouth’s Junior  (Green Key) and Senior (Paeleopitus) service organizations.  His fraternity brothers included several men who have gone on to careers of achievement and distinction including the United States Secretary of Labor, the Governor of Maine, and the Attorney General of Kentucky.

He attended the University of Chicago, Graduate School of Business, and has a Vietnam era Honorable Discharge from the United States Army Reserves.

Ed also paid for 100% of his legal education, at the University of Texas, School of Law, first working as a research assistant in the History of Education Department and, later, founding a private, for-profit, legal research company. He was a Teaching Quizmaster and inducted into Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity, which limits membership to the top 15% of each Class. He co-authored, with Columbia University Law School Professor Vincent Blasi, a lengthy article on First Amendment Law that was published in the University of Michigan Law Review.

Ed returned to Houston after passing the Bar Examination, and has been in private practice ever since. He is a Board Certified Criminal Law expert and a past President of the National Association Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. Ed has taught at more than 100 law school and legal seminars throughout the United States. He has successfully tried major white collar cases, death penalty cases, and successfully defended two defendants in the largest marijuana case ever filed in federal court.

He never prosecuted, except for three cases as a Special Prosecutor in Grievance Proceedings, by appointment of the President of the State Bar of Texas. On the other hand, he was on the team prosecuting a civil claim made by a Plaintiff “whistle-blower” and was awarded a share of the biggest fraud-against-the-taxpayers award in history, the $1.7 billion qui tam recovery from Columbia/Health Care Corporation of America. The case was filed in 1995 and the judgment was entered and paid in 2003. He is often associated to help with civil cases that raise criminal law issues, such as allegations of fraud, tax evasion, improper pricing, insider information and disputes with state and federal regulatory agencies. He also represents lawyers in grievance proceedings, doctors before the State Board of Medical Examiners, and military personnel in courts martial.

The Mallett family lives in Houston’s Museum District near Rice University. They are active in the Houston Society for Performing Arts. Theresa Mallett is SPA Vice President for Community Affairs. David Mallett graduated from middle school at the Awty International School, where he learned to speak Spanish and Arabic. David now boards at a college preparatory school in Massachusetts.
